Welcome to Catalyst Project

Catalyst Project is a center for political education and movement-building based in the San Francisco Bay Area. We work to create a world where all people are free from oppression and exploitation. Catalyst Project works in majority white communities with the goal of deepening anti-racist commitment and building multiracial movements for liberation. We create spaces for organizers to develop and share analysis, visions and strategies to build movements for racial, economic, gender and ecological justice. Catalyst programs prioritize leadership development, supporting grassroots organizations and multiracial alliance building.

Seeking Spring 2013 Intern

Apply today for our Grassroots Fundraising Internship

Intern with Catalyst Project to develop hands-on fundraising skills in an organization with a track record of cutting-edge community-based grassroots fundraising, while contributing to building up racial, economic and gender justice organizing. Our model integrates grassroots fundraising with organizing, in order to keep our work accountable to the communities we are based in.

“From working in the office, to outreach in the streets, my internship with Catalyst was always enriching, facilitating my learning and growth in many  ways. I gained experience around grassroots fundraising, organizing strategies and theoretical analysis. I was able to solidify my commitment to social justice, expand my motives for joining the struggle, and clarify what roles are most strategic for me to fill, as someone with many forms of privilege. For anyone looking to get serious about anti-racism, and for anyone looking to work alongside some very inspiring folks towards collective liberation, I would strongly recommend applying for a Catalyst internship.” – Akki Mackay 2012 Fundraising Intern

Update from Catalyst’s Antiwar/Global Justice Program

In August, Catalyst supported 3 of our fabulous former interns to participate in field organizing with Iraq Veterans Against The War, in an outreach drive based out of the G.I. coffeehouse Coffee Strong outside Joint Base Lewis-McChord (near Tacoma, WA). Anna Stitt, Sarah Lombardo, and Julian Marszalek outreached to soldiers and helped build the Operation Recovery campaign, working to stop deployment of traumatized troops and sink anti-militarist roots into working-class communities.

Some of Anna’s reflections: (click “continue reading” for her powerful story)

Working on the Operation Recovery outreach drive was hard, provocative, and beautiful. I have done mostly white ally work in racial justice struggles, as well as white anti-racist work. Working as a civilian ally in a veteran-led space was new for me. It was powerful for me to work with veterans, whose processes of politicization looked different than mine. Continue reading

Building Grassroots Power to End Racism: The 2012 Elections and Beyond

Catalyst Project believes we need to create a new world, where all people are free from all forms of oppression and are able to live in sustainable relationship with the earth. We envision a world based on global justice where everyone has housing, income, water and food, relevant education and healthcare. Creating this type of material change is no small order and will require a fundamental transformation of power on a global scale. It will require vibrant, massive, multiracial social movements that unite the 99% around the world, and build power at the grassroots. Another way to say this is we want global revolution that liberates all people from oppression.

Anne Braden Program 2013 Applications are now closed

Thank you to everyone who helped to spread the word about the 2013 Anne Braden Anti-Racist Organizer Training Program. We received more than 90 outstanding applicantions from people across north America. Applications were due September 15th and the application process is now closed.

The Anne Braden Program combines weekly political education sessions and volunteer placements with local racial justice organizations. It is designed for white social justice activists and organizers to build skills, analysis, and practice. It’s not a series of “101” style workshops, but a leadership development program intended to support white people who are already politically active in becoming more effective and accountable anti-racist organizers, leaders, and multi-racial movement builders.

For programs training activists of color, please visit our allies at SOUL (School of Unity and Liberation) schoolofunityandliberation.org and the Center for Third World Organizing at ctwo.org.  Together we are working to train up leaders to build movements for collective liberation.

In the midst of economic turmoil, ecological crisis, and ongoing wars, we in Catalyst Project have been deeply inspired by people’s movements for justice, freedom, and political participation that blossomed throughout the Arab world and beyond. As we enter another presidential election year, which often brings issues of systemic racism into sharp focus, Catalyst is honored to be working alongside many of you in migrant justice, G.I. resistance, transformative justice, Palestine solidarity, and other movements to build a stronger U.S. Left connected with global movements. We're glad to share with you the annual report for the last year of Catalyst Project's work. We look forward to continuing to create, along with you, a world abundant with justice, health, and liberation for all people.
